Legendary Norwegian duo Darkthrone has returned with a new studio effort titled Pre-Historic Metal, released on May 8, 2026. This release marks the 40th anniversary of the duo’s initial formation under the moniker Black Death. Fenriz and Nocturno Culto collaborated more closely in the studio for this record than in previous efforts, resulting in a sound described by Fenriz as frightfully barbaric but not without finesse.
The album serves as an odyssey through various sonic landscapes, including thrash, black, heavy, and doom metal, unified by a punishing guitar presence. Along with the full album launch, the band debuted a lyric video for the track „They Found One Of My Graves.” This next chapter in their extensive catalogue reinforces their status as imperishable genre legends.
