The music world is saddened by the passing of Sam Rivers, the co-founding bassist of the influential American nu metal band Limp Bizkit. Rivers died at the age of 48, as confirmed by the group in a heartfelt social media announcement.
The band’s tribute highlighted Rivers’ immense contribution, stating he was more than just their bass player—he was „the soul in the sound.” The members, including Fred Durst, John Otto, and DJ Lethal, lauded his effortless talent, unforgettable presence, and „enormous heart,” noting, „From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced.”
Rivers’ passing comes as a shock to the band, with DJ Lethal (Leor Dimant) expressing their distress on Instagram: „We are in shock.” Lethal also used the opportunity to ask for privacy for Rivers’ family during this difficult time.
The cause of Rivers’ death has not been disclosed.
The bassist was an integral part of Limp Bizkit from their formation in 1994. Alongside his bandmates, Rivers helped define the sound of the late 1990s and early 2000s, blending hip-hop and rock with often expletive-laden lyrics to successfully bring heavy music into the mainstream. Their catalogue includes major successes like the albums Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, as well as hit singles such as „Take a Look Around” and the chart-topping „Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle)”.
Beyond his work with the band, which saw him receive the Gibson award for Best Bassist in 2000, Rivers was also championed for his philanthropic efforts. DJ Lethal noted that Rivers would „live on through your music and the lives you helped save with your music, charity work and friendships.”
Rivers had faced significant health challenges in the past, stemming from „excessive drinking.” He told author Jon Wiederhorn for the book Raising Hell that he left the band for several years beginning in 2015 due to liver disease. He successfully quit drinking, received treatment, and underwent a liver transplant, which he described as a „perfect match.”
Despite his hiatus, Limp Bizkit has remained active. The group released a new single, „Making Love to Morgan Wallen,” in September and recently performed at the Reading Festival in August. Their last full-length album, Still Sucks, was released four years ago.
The band concluded their tribute by reflecting on their time together: „We shared so many moments – wild ones, quiet ones, beautiful ones – and every one of them meant more because Sam was there.”
