Listening to the new album from Black Orchid Empire, you get the feeling that this British trio has truly mastered the balance between technical prowess and simply writing great songs. LORE isn’t just another tedious progressive album trying to overwhelm the listener with complexity; instead, it is a thoughtful narrative that, true to its title, draws us into its own unique musical world. The band is well-known for their ability to play ambitiously, yet their music still maintains a lot of breathing room.

Production-wise, this record is a seriously high-quality piece of progressive playing. Every instrument has its rightful place, the compositions are deliberate, and the sound is polished in every detail, all while building a very skillful atmosphere. The drums also sound remarkably natural, which is a huge plus compared to today’s often „plastic” standards. The musicians juggle rhythms and dynamics with an ease that strongly brings Tesseract to mind—and while it’s not quite as fragmented, it certainly approaches that level of intricacy at times, such as in „Lost Horizon”—but they do it so seamlessly that all those shifts feel completely smooth. The vocals bite into the tracks perfectly, giving them a narrative character and creating a multi-layered structure that never feels over-engineered despite its richness.

This is a refined and highly enjoyable record that will undoubtedly find appreciation within the progressive scene. It offers a wealth of intelligent, powerful playing with soul, proving that these musicians know exactly where they want to go.
