Dark Absence – Dark Abscence [2024]

Recently, a new band called Dark Absence made its debut on the German metal scene, releasing their first full-length album simply titled “Dark Absence” in 2024. Comprising three musicians, the band faces both challenges and potential that are already beginning to show promising results. Let’s take a closer look at their debut album and see what they have to offer.

Formed in 2022, Dark Absence blends elements of melodic death metal, metalcore, and post-hardcore, creating a distinctive sound. Despite being a relatively young band, their debut album demonstrates a diverse range of inspirations. The melodic death metal we encounter here is particularly varied in terms of intensity. From the very first notes, it’s clear that the band strives to combine a melodeath backbone with melodic passages. However, the album’s sound feels somewhat uneven. In the more aggressive sections, there’s a lack of power that could make some tracks evoke stronger emotions if packaged with a more impactful sound.

Another point worth noting is the tempo of the songs. The band opted for a more conservative approach, which might disappoint fans looking for crazier, more intense sounds. There’s no frantic chase for sound or blasting sections, which may make Dark Absence feel a bit too gentle for some listeners. Nonetheless, the inclusion of calm, atmospheric interludes, like those in the track “Days In Red,” adds an interesting element that allows for a breather and prepares the listener for the unfolding of further musical ideas.

The vocals on “Dark Absence” are varied, showcasing a full spectrum of tones. From deep growls to typical screams and melodic recitations, the band displays their vocal skills at different levels. Clean vocals, however, are a mixed bag—sometimes better, sometimes worse. Personally, I’m not a fan of using clean vocals in this genre. The clean singing in Dark Absence isn’t particularly captivating, though in some tracks (like the chorus of “The Imminent Fall”), they are acceptable. Unfortunately, in others, they fall flat (as in “Before Your Eyes”), especially the acapella parts, which leave much to be desired.

One of the most positive aspects of the album is the work of the lead guitarist. His solos are moving and add a lot of emotion to the songs. It’s also worth highlighting sections like the beginning of “Velvety Sea,” where the band demonstrates their ability to convey aggression and intensity, resulting in a really good effect. If Dark Absence can harness this potential and incorporate more elements like this into their music, they will undoubtedly achieve a much greater impact in the future.

While “Dark Absence” is an intriguing debut, it is not without its flaws. The band certainly has work ahead to navigate broader waters. Personally, I believe that if they choose to limit the use of clean vocals and inject more aggression, intensity, and speed into their music, their future releases could be significantly more satisfying. As Dark Absence evolves and experiments with their sound, I’m confident they will transform their ideas into something truly unique that will find its audience.
