Mindreaper – Withering Shine (…into Oblivion) [2024]

The German band Mindreaper has been delivering heavy music to fans for over two decades, exploring the realms of melodic death metal. Formed in 2001, the band has undergone numerous changes in both lineup and style, but one thing has remained constant: their passion for creating metal music. After years of activity, the time has come for their third full-length release, titled “Withering Shine (…into Oblivion),” set to premiere in December 2024 under Death Age Records.

Mindreaper originated in Lauterbach/Alsfeld and is currently based in Wetzlar. Their music can be linked to the legacy of the Swedish death metal scene, which is no coincidence. The band draws inspiration from the classics of the genre while adding their own distinctive elements to their work.

The album “Withering Shine (…into Oblivion)” maintains the style of melodic death metal with a clear heavy metal influence. This combination makes the album accessible to a wider audience, even those who don’t typically reach for strictly heavier sounds. The compositions are well-produced, which is crucial for a positive reception in today’s music landscape. They are not artificially enhanced in the studio, which is also a notable advantage. “Withering Shine (…into Oblivion)” features tracks that predominantly rely on melodic lines and moderate tempos. The musicians of Mindreaper opted for relatively calm rhythms that capture attention and allow listeners to focus on the melodies. Each track has thoughtful structures, and the highlighted bass parts in certain sections add interesting variety and depth to the overall sound. The production is polished, with each instrument clearly audible. The guitars, which form the backbone of the music, create many catchy moments throughout the album. Although the vocals are somewhat uniform, they fit perfectly within the album’s atmosphere, with their timbre and character blending well with the rest of the band.

While the album is enjoyable to listen to, I can’t shake the feeling that it lacks a certain level of aggression that I often expect from even melodic bands. Bands that can balance heavy, energetic sections with melody always leave a greater impression on me. Mindreaper, however, has chosen to emphasize melody, which is understandable given the guitarists’ experience in heavy and symphonic metal. At times, the album reminds me of the band The Wake, particularly their album “Ode To My Misery.” This melodiousness and thoughtful compositions mean that “Withering Shine (…into Oblivion)” could appeal to fans not only of death metal but also of other music styles.

“Withering Shine (…into Oblivion)” is a solid offering for fans of melodic death metal. Despite certain shortcomings in intensity and aggression, the album delivers a good dose of respectable metal. While it may not be a groundbreaking release, it certainly deserves attention and could become a valuable addition to any melodic death metal fan’s collection. For enthusiasts, this will surely be an enjoyable journey, though for those seeking something new in metal music, Mindreaper may not be a particularly intriguing option. The band primarily explores well-trodden paths, yet their long-standing commitment to creating also commands big respect.
