Purity In Perversion [love to blast beats]

As the brutal slam death metal scene continues to evolve and attract new fans, one band making waves with their striking debut is Canada’s own Purity In Perversion. With the release of their first full-length album, “NewBorn BabyBong,” the band showcases a powerful blend of crushing riffs, intricate techniques, and dynamic compositions. The album, marked by its dark and grotesque artwork, promises an intense auditory experience.

Hi, how is everything going with your band and in Canada in general right now?

Good thanks! People are hyped up for the upcoming release shows!

We mainly need to discuss your debut full-length album “NewBorn BabyBong,” which you released independently. What were the biggest challenges of self-releasing an album in today’s world?

We started recording the album late 2023, and finished it around spring 2024 if I remember correctly. The hardest part was finding the time in all of our busy schedules to work on it and it’s not free you know haha! It costs a lot of money. Big shoutout to Marc-Antoine Desjardins for all the time he put into the recording process and the mix!

The album cover is dark and grotesque, yet quite typical for the genre you are in. Did you have something specific in mind with this artwork, or did you leave it more to the artist’s discretion to create something that fits the character of the music according to their vision? How did you collaborate with the artist to achieve this effect?

We went with Rudi Yanto (GorgingSuicide on instagram!). He did previous work with our drummer’s other band, Spirit Of Rebellion so we knew what he was capable of. We gave him a starting point, and after 3 or 4 revisions we got to the final version! We wanted something that fit well with the album title and we think that he did an awesome job.

Brutal slam death metal is a genre that attracts a fairly diverse audience within death metal. What are your hopes regarding what listeners will take away from your music after experiencing “NewBorn BabyBong”?

We make music that we like to play and listen to first and foremost. While writing we don’t ask ourselves “what will people want to hear from us?”, we write what we want to hear from ourselves! But we’re clearly happy if other people happen to like us!

The album features a fantastic sound and very technical compositions. What were your main sources of inspiration in creating this album? Which bands from the slam death metal scene currently inspire you the most? What are your favorite albums in the brutal death metal genre that may have influenced your music?

We’re all big fans of Cryptopsy and Visceral Disgorge, so clearly those 2 bands influence us a lot. The favorite album that all members of the band can put in their top 5 is Ingesting Putridity by Visceral Disgorge. We all listen to different music so it becomes a mix and match with a lot of influences.

I mentioned the very balanced sound and massive riffs. What was the recording and mixing process like to achieve such an effect?

Marc-Antoine Desjardins is the mastermind behind all the recording and mixing, we also worked on the guitar tones with him while recording. We wanted to have the same sound that you heard on the album in live performances. Also, big shoutout to Christian Donaldson for the mastering.

Drumming and its intensity play a crucial role in your music. What approach do you take to drumming to achieve such intense and diverse parts? What method do you use when composing material?

Drum is everything, Raph (drummer) is the shit! Everything you heard on this album, our drummer will deliver the same in a live event (sometimes even faster lol). He will take the time needed to put his touch on everything. We compose almost every track with our drummer, this is priceless when composing material.

It’s hard not to notice the cinematic inserts before the songs. Where does your fondness for this type of embellishment in your music come from? One insert definitely stands out, that from “La Chanson Des Jours De La Semaine.” Where does that excerpt come from?

It’s from “Alain le lait”. He’s a french singer for kids that started in the 1990. In our version, It’s about drugs. Each day is now drug day when you become addicted. But each day is also a good day to recover. We put the sample for you as a friendly reminder. For us, it’s a “Kids don’t do drugs” type of song.

What themes do you address in the lyrics of your songs, who is the author, and what message do they convey?

From the titles, I gather they are probably quite grotesque and should be taken with a grain of salt. You definitely should take us with a grain of salt. Our vocalist and drummer mostly write the lyrics. Some songs have a deeper meaning, others don’t. Well, a lot of them don’t haha! We try to stand out of the gorish lyrics brutal death normally offers. We mostly have fun and laugh when it’s time to write things down.

Do you have any plans for concerts in Europe? What can fans expect during your live performances?

We wish we had, we are open for booking! People can expect a soul crushing experience, a lot of fun and intensity on stage!

What have been the reactions from fans to “NewBorn BabyBong” so far? Have you received any particular feedback that has stuck with you?

Slam Papi (Alexandre Brochu) from NecroticGoreBeast told us that we found our sound that identifies us from the other great bands. We have created our own identity with this album. Best quote so far is “I’m happy I saw Raph (drums) play live once, otherwise I would have doubted his ability to play these songs live”.

How do you feel brutal slam death metal stands out from other metal subgenres in your view? What makes it unique, and what specifically do you appreciate about it?

It’s the heaviest, grooviest, most primal and aggressive subgenre in the game! Also, blasts beats. We love blast Beats!

Which bands operating in your region would you highlight as noteworthy?

Spirit of Rebellion for sure because it’s the other band of our drummer! They’ll release an album probably next year! Otherwise our good friends from Anti-criss, Pastoral, Mush and Riffchild. Go check them out!

If you could invite one artist just to criticize them for an album that disappointed you, who would it be?

John Lennon and Yoko Ono ‘Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins’. You are a wild man John.

If you could make any person, living or dead, listen to your music, who would it be?

Gerry Boulet, Rock n’ roll!

What are your views on the current global political climate, especially regarding the outcome of the presidential elections in the USA?

It puts a lot of tensions on the rules-based international order.

Thank you very much for the interview, best wishes, and good luck. I hope to see you at concerts in Europe!
